This was a period characterized by a weak central government, feudalism, and the role of the Catholic Church. Pope Urban II calling on Christians to take back the Holy Land
Image released to the public domain The Crusades were a series of holy wars between Muslims and Christians during the 11th and 13th centuries. Pope Urban II called upon all Christians to take back the Holy Land in the Middle East from the Muslims. This led to an increase of trade and interaction between Europe and the Middle East. The Black Death (bubonic plague) was a disease that came to Europe from Asia via the Silk Road in the mid 14th century. It would wipe out a 1/3 of the European population and have devastating implications for the European economy. However, this did lead to a decline in feudalism. Last Modified on June 12, 2011
